Welcome to the SRE Music Room!

At Sunset Ridge Elementary School students meet twice a week for 30-minute music classes where we sing, dance and play a wide variety of instruments.  We believe that every child should learn how to make music, not just learn "about" music.  To that end, we start right way in Kindergarten learning how to use our beautiful and healthy singing voices.  We learn how to move our bodies to music through beat-keeping, folk dancing, and creative movement.  We learn how to play small percussion instruments, xylophones, recorders, and drums.  Every day in music class we have something new and fun to learn and do.

What we do in Music Class:

Singing is an important part of our music classes.  Did you know that singing releases endorphins in your body and makes you feel happy?  When our students grow up, they should be able to sing a lullaby to their own babies, to sing happy birthday to their friends, and sing the national anthem at the Royals' games.  Singing just feels good!

Moving and dancing to music is essential for the development of young musicians.  SRE students learn folk dances from around the world, as well a creative movement for music we play and sing in class.

World Music Drumming

In 2007 the Blue Valley Education Foundation awarded SRE a grant for 25 drums and several small percussion instruments to start a "world music drumming" program in our school.  Every child, from kindergarten through 5th grade learns how to play these drums.

Mallet Instruments

Xylophones, Metallophones and Glockenspiels are played by every all SRE students.  The percussion instruments in our music room give students the opportunity to build valuable skills in hand/eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills and muscle memory.

In 4th grade, every SRE student learns to play the soprano recorder. To learn more about the recorder, and to hear samples of the songs we will learn, click on the "Recorder" tab at the top of the page.

Thanks to a grant from the SRE PTO, we have 16 ukuleles for our students.  SRE children begin learning to play the ukulele in 3rd grade.
